The Congressional Gold Medal and the Montford Point Marines

A key focus of our outreach is honoring the legacy of African American military pioneers. We were honored to take part in a Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony recognizing the Montford Point Marines, who served our nation with courage during World War II despite racial segregation.

This historic recognition reflects resilience, perseverance, and faith — values that continue to inspire generations today. The ceremony served as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who paved the way for equality within the United States Marine Corps.

The Congressional Gold Medal, awarded in 2012, honors nearly 20,000 Montford Point Marines who trained between 1942 and 1949. Authorized by President Barack Obama, the award recognizes these Marines for their perseverance, courage, and lasting impact on racial integration within the U.S. Marine Corps. Presenting the Congressional Gold Medal to the family of original Montford Point Marine, Private Thomas Martin (deceased), is National President Master Gunnery Sergeant Ronald Johnson and Past National President Chief Warrant Officer 5 Dr. James T Averhart.
